Switzerland Schengen visa

🇨🇭 Hotel booking for a Switzerland Schengen visa

Yes — the Swiss short-stay checklist lists "Proof of accommodation in Switzerland / Schengen states" as its own numbered document, and states it is met by confirmation of hotel reservations, package tours or advance payments. A QR-verifiable hotel booking confirmation for your exact dates satisfies this — emailed as a PDF in under 60 seconds.

A Switzerland Schengen visa is decided by the Swiss embassy or consulate responsible for where you live, but the file itself is lodged at a Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global, which the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs appointed as its external service provider following a public procurement procedure, with the handover from TLScontact beginning 1 July 2025. One point catches applicants out: since 18 June 2025 the harmonised Schengen application form is completed online inside VFS Global's appointment-booking portal, then printed and signed and brought to the appointment — it is not filled in at the counter. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) also publishes the form as a free PDF at sem.admin.ch, and some Swiss checklists still link there, so check which route your post expects before you fill anything in. Swiss representations also issue Schengen visas on behalf of Liechtenstein, which operates no visa service of its own.

What the consulate expects

Switzerland's Visa Application Centres are operated by VFS Global. At posts that TLScontact previously ran — the United Kingdom, Turkey and Russia among them — the handover took place in a staggered rollout during 2025, and the old visas-ch.tlscontact.com portal no longer serves Swiss applications. Elsewhere, including India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Singapore, VFS Global was already the Swiss provider before that change, so there was nothing to transfer. VFS Global handles only the administrative side (appointment booking, document intake, biometrics) and its acceptance of your file guarantees nothing; the decision rests entirely with the Swiss representation, which can still ask for more documents or an interview. A pre-booked appointment is mandatory: with no appointment, neither the centre nor the embassy will accept the application.

The confirmation shows each traveller's full name exactly as printed in the passport, the property's address and contact details, the check-in and check-out dates and a booking reference — and it needs to account for every night of the trip across the Schengen area, not only the Swiss leg.

Typical documents for a Switzerland Schengen visa

Applications for a Switzerland Schengen visa commonly include:

  • Valid national passport issued within the last 10 years, with at least three months' validity beyond your scheduled return date and at least two blank pages — the Swiss embassy in India adds that handwritten passports, and passports carrying observations on the bio-data page, cannot be accepted
  • The completed and signed Schengen visa application form — at VFS Global posts this is filled in online during appointment booking and then printed and signed; SEM also publishes the form as a free PDF at sem.admin.ch. One recent passport photograph on a white background, no older than six months, pasted onto the form: stapled or pinned photos are refused
  • Introduction letter on company letterhead, signed and stamped by HR or the directorate, giving your position and length of service, stating no objection to the trip, and naming the travel dates and purpose
  • Travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 for repatriation, urgent medical attention and emergency hospital treatment, valid for the entire stay in the Schengen area — the Swiss embassy in India will only accept policies from its published list of approved Indian insurers
  • Proof of financial status as originals in A4 format bearing the bank's stamp and signature — recent salary slips and personal statements if employed, business registration and statements if self-employed, or pension statements if retired
  • Flight reservation naming every traveller, plus proof of intra-Schengen flights, the train itinerary or the car rental where the trip covers more than one country
  • Proof of accommodation in Switzerland / Schengen states — confirmation of hotel reservations, package tours or advance payments

Frequently asked questions

My Swiss host is covering my costs — do I still need hotel confirmations?
Treat these as two separate requirements, because SEM does. The declaration of sponsorship (Verpflichtungserklärung) is proof of sufficient financial means — it is not proof of accommodation, and it does not replace the accommodation document on the checklist. For nights you genuinely spend at your host's home, the host's address and invitation cover the lodging; for every other night of the Schengen trip the checklist still wants a booking confirmation. The sponsorship route also works unlike almost any other Schengen state's. SEM states the form is not available online and will not be handed out in advance: the embassy issues it only if, on examining your file, it concludes one is necessary. You complete question 1 and forward it to your host, who completes and signs it and sends it to the cantonal migration authority — or to the communal authority instead if they live in Aargau, Basel-Landschaft, Bern, Fribourg, Graubünden, Schwyz, St. Gallen, Thurgau, Uri, Vaud, Valais, Zug or Zurich — paying a processing fee in advance. It commits the guarantor to a maximum of CHF 30,000 for an individual or a group of up to ten travelling together, takes effect the day you enter Switzerland, runs for 12 months and may not be revoked. Note SEM's own warning: even where the authority approves the declaration, the applicant still has no legal right to a visa. Because the form only appears once the consulate asks for it, never plan on it as your day-one evidence of anything.
I'm visiting Switzerland plus France and Italy — do I apply to Switzerland?
Only if Switzerland is your main destination. Under the Visa Code that means the country that is the main destination by length of stay or by the purpose of the trip — usually the most nights, but a short leg can still be the main destination if it is the reason for travelling. Swiss stays are often the shortest part of a wider European trip, so a tourist with three nights in Lucerne, four in Paris and four in Rome does not apply to Switzerland at all. Where the nights are split evenly with no single main destination, you apply to the state you will enter the Schengen area through first. Either way the Swiss checklist wants accommodation for the whole Schengen itinerary, not just the Swiss nights, and it separately asks for proof of intra-Schengen flights, the train itinerary or the car rental linking those stops.
Is my application still handled by TLScontact, and what does it cost?
Not any more. Where TLScontact ran Switzerland's Visa Application Centres — the UK, Turkey and Russia among others — the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs awarded the contract to VFS Global after a public procurement procedure, with the changeover starting 1 July 2025 and rolling out region by region. At many other posts, India and the Philippines included, VFS Global was already the Swiss provider beforehand. The centre is an administrative intermediary — it books your appointment, takes your documents and captures biometrics — and the Swiss representation alone decides. Fingerprints are generally reused if they were captured for a Schengen visa within the previous 59 months. Fees on the Swiss checklist are EUR 90 for adults, EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, and free for under-6s. One further wrinkle: in countries with no Swiss visa section, another Schengen state may issue visas on Switzerland's behalf, and SEM confirms those posts can still require the Swiss declaration of sponsorship.
Does a Swiss visa cover Liechtenstein, and is Switzerland any different at the border?
You do not apply separately for Liechtenstein. Under a framework agreement in force since 19 December 2011, Swiss representations issue Schengen visas on Liechtenstein's behalf, and a host based in Liechtenstein files their declaration of sponsorship with the Ausländer- und Passamt in Vaduz under the same Swiss rules — SEM's leaflet lists that office alongside the cantonal authorities. On the border, do not assume an open crossing in 2026. Switzerland is a full Schengen member, but several neighbours have reintroduced temporary internal border controls: Germany is running checks at its land border with Switzerland, France has extended controls across all its borders, and Switzerland has reintroduced controls of its own, with the European Council authorising further prolongation. Checks are spot checks rather than systematic, but carry your passport and visa and allow extra time. Separately, Switzerland sits outside the EU customs union, so customs and goods controls have always continued at Swiss borders and duty allowances still apply. None of this changes your visa or your accommodation evidence — it changes how long the crossing takes.
