🇵🇹 Hotel booking for a Portugal Schengen visa

Yes — the official portal vistos.mne.gov.pt lists "hotel reservation (if applicable) or statement of responsibility" among short-stay documents, and the category C checklist used by Portugal's US visa centre asks for "Proof of accommodations for entire stay or statement of responsibility". That checklist adds that if you are travelling to other Schengen states as well, proof of accommodation is needed from each country. A QR-verifiable hotel booking confirmation for your exact dates satisfies this — emailed as a PDF in under 60 seconds.

Portugal runs its visa rules through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs portal at vistos.mne.gov.pt, and gov.pt also points applicants to an official E-Visa portal at pedidodevistos.mne.pt — but in most countries the file itself is still lodged in person at an external visa application centre. Which company runs that centre depends entirely on where you apply: it is VFS Global in the United States, the United Kingdom, India and the UAE, but BLS International in Morocco and TLScontact in Algeria. gov.pt says to apply "between 6 months and 15 days before the date you intend to enter Portugal", and notes that an application filed fewer than 15 days ahead can still be accepted in exceptional, properly justified cases.

Does Portugal require proof of accommodation?

Yes — the official portal vistos.mne.gov.pt lists "hotel reservation (if applicable) or statement of responsibility" among short-stay documents, and the category C checklist used by Portugal's US visa centre asks for "Proof of accommodations for entire stay or statement of responsibility". That checklist adds that if you are travelling to other Schengen states as well, proof of accommodation is needed from each country.

What the consulate expects

Portugal deliberately does not use one global provider. VFS Global operates the Portugal centres in the United States, in the UK (London for the London consular jurisdiction, Manchester for its own, with Edinburgh as a satellite centre of Manchester), in India and in the UAE, while BLS International runs the Portugal centres in Morocco and TLScontact handles Portugal applications in Algiers — so a checklist copied from the wrong provider's site can be the wrong checklist. Appointments are compulsory: VFS Global's Portugal UK page states that every customer, including children and infants, must apply in person and by appointment only, and warns that peak-season slots go quickly because "the Mission only processes a fixed amount of visa applications on a daily basis".

Portugal's US checklist wants a tourist's accommodation document to be a confirmed hotel or holiday-home reservation or tour voucher showing the name, address and telephone of the hotel, and to state clearly the applicant's name, the arrival and departure dates and the hotel's address — worth checking your confirmation carries every one of those before you submit it.

Typical documents for a Portugal Schengen visa

Applications for a Portugal Schengen visa commonly include:

  • Schengen application form, fully completed and — per the US checklist — typed up rather than handwritten, signed by the applicant (by the legal guardian for minors and incapacitated applicants). The US centre warns that on a mailed-in application the signature must be notarised or "the application will be sent back".
  • One passport-sized colour photograph on a white background, 35mm x 45mm, recent enough to identify the applicant; the US checklist adds that it must be not more than five months old.
  • Passport or travel document valid at least three months beyond your exit from the Schengen area and recognised by all Schengen states, plus photocopies of prior passports and of Schengen visas obtained in the last three years. The US checklist also requires that the passport was issued within the last ten years and has at least two blank pages.
  • Copy of a confirmed round-trip air ticket with dates and flight numbers specifying entry to and exit from every Schengen state on the itinerary; if you travel on to further Schengen states with no connecting flight, add car hire, ferry, coach or train tickets as proof.
  • Travel medical insurance covering the entire intended stay, valid in all Schengen states, covering repatriation, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment and death — minimum EUR 30,000, which the US checklist renders as the equivalent of USD 50,000 and requires to carry a zero-dollar deductible.
  • Proof of accommodation for the entire stay — for tourists, a confirmed hotel or holiday-home reservation or tour voucher showing the hotel's name, address and telephone, or a rental agreement; if staying with family or friends, an invitation letter or term of responsibility from the host instead. Proof of accommodation is needed from each Schengen country you visit.
  • Proof of means of subsistence: work and salary certificate plus the last three months of bank statements, covering the whole stay and the return home. Self-employed applicants substitute tax returns and proof of income from the previous fiscal year; retired applicants, three months of bank statements.
  • Evidence of your immigration status where you are applying: the US checklist requires proof and a copy of US residency status (green card, Employment Authorization Card or US visa), and a certificate of being in a regular situation where the applicant holds a nationality other than that of the country where the visa is requested.

Frequently asked questions

Will a hotel reservation do, or does Portugal want a termo de responsabilidade?
Either, depending on where you sleep. Tourists staying commercially submit a confirmed hotel or holiday-home booking, tour voucher or rental agreement. If you are staying with friends or family, Portugal instead expects a termo de responsabilidade — the trilingual AIMA-model form hosted on the visa portal at vistos.mne.gov.pt, used under Article 14(4) of the Visa Code to cover accommodation and the bearing of costs. Portugal's form is unusual in making the host specify whether they are responsible for accommodation only or for all the costs, so an ordinary unsigned invitation letter is not a substitute. The signature has to be formally recognised: since 4 November 2024 AIMA accepts the Modelo 4 term only where the signature is recognised by a notary, lawyer or solicitor (the exception, irrelevant if you are abroad, is signing in front of an AIMA officer), and Portugal's US checklist likewise wants the host's signature notarised. A host who is not a Portuguese national must also prove they are legally in Portugal.
I am doing Lisbon plus Madrid or Barcelona on one trip — do I apply to Portugal, and do I need Spanish hotels too?
You apply to the state of your main destination, meaning the one where you spend the longest stay, so a Lisbon-heavy Iberian trip goes to Portugal and a Spain-heavy one does not. Portugal's US checklist puts it as: Portugal will accept the application if the stay in Portugal is the longest, or — where two stays are of equal duration — if Portugal is the first state of entry. That equal-duration tiebreak matters if your nights split evenly. Either way the checklist is explicit that if you are travelling to other Schengen states as well, proof of accommodation is needed from each country, so your Madrid or Barcelona nights need their own confirmation alongside the Portuguese one.
How much money does Portugal want to see, and does having accommodation booked reduce it?
Portugal sets its own figure rather than leaving it vague: under Portaria n.º 1563/2007 a traveller on a transit or short-stay visa, or admitted without a visa, must hold or be able to lawfully obtain per capita the equivalent of EUR 75 for each entry plus EUR 40 for each day of stay. Portugal's US checklist repeats the same numbers and asks for three months of bank statements plus a letter of employment. Under Article 12 of Law 23/2007 those amounts may be waived where the traveller proves accommodation and food are secured for the stay, or presents a termo de responsabilidade — but the host signing that term has to demonstrate their own means. Treat it as a possible reduction rather than a guarantee: the consular officer decides, and it is safer to show the full amount and the booking.
Can I skip the visa centre and apply at the Portuguese consulate directly?
Usually not. Portugal has contracted external service providers in most jurisdictions and routes applications through them — VFS Global in the US, UK, India and the UAE, BLS International in Morocco, TLScontact in Algeria — and an appointment is normally mandatory. Because each mission caps how many applications it processes per day, slots are the real bottleneck: the Portuguese Embassy in New Delhi publishes public notices announcing when VFS releases slot windows across its Indian centres, and the Portuguese Embassy in Rabat periodically runs capacity-limited open-door mornings at the BLS Rabat centre where Schengen applications are taken without a prior appointment. Those are occasional and first-come, so check the relevant embassy's notices and book as soon as your dates are firm.
