Netherlands Schengen visa

🇳🇱 Hotel booking for a Netherlands Schengen visa

Yes — the Dutch short-stay checklist asks for "a hotel reservation or rental agreement for the entire duration of your trip", or proof that you own property in the Netherlands. If you are staying with family or friends who are also sponsoring your costs, a proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form (IND form 1310), signed by your host and legalised by the Dutch municipality where they are registered, takes the place of the hotel booking. A QR-verifiable hotel booking confirmation for your exact dates satisfies this — emailed as a PDF in under 60 seconds.

The Netherlands runs its short-stay applications through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' own online portal: you create an account, fill in the Schengen form there, then print and sign it, because only forms completed online receive the unique code the consulate needs — and the official guidance warns that the form does not work on a smartphone, so use a computer or tablet. The signed form and supporting documents are then lodged in person at an external service provider's application centre, while the Dutch embassy or consulate-general remains the authority that assesses and decides the application. The Dutch country pages let you apply up to six months ahead but ask you to apply no later than 45 days before your trip — a good deal earlier than the EU Visa Code's 15-day minimum — so your accommodation evidence needs to exist well before you travel.

Does Netherlands require proof of accommodation?

What the consulate expects

The Netherlands does not use a single provider worldwide. VFS Global operates its application centres in countries including the United States (Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Washington D.C.), the United Kingdom, India, Türkiye and Morocco, while applications in mainland China are lodged at TLScontact centres in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu. Where the Netherlands has no application location in your country of residence, you may be directed to the embassy or consulate-general of another Schengen country that represents it. Check the Dutch "where to apply" page for your own country of residence before booking an appointment.

The confirmation shows the property's name and full street address in the Netherlands, the guest name exactly as it is written in the passport, and check-in and check-out dates that cover every night of the itinerary declared on the application form.

Typical documents for a Netherlands Schengen visa

Applications for a Netherlands Schengen visa commonly include:

  • Schengen visa application form completed in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs online portal, then printed and signed — only forms completed online receive a unique code, and forms without one may cause issues when your application is processed
  • Passport no more than 10 years old, with at least two empty visa pages, signed, and valid for at least three months after the date you intend to leave the Schengen area
  • One colour photograph, 35 x 45 mm, no more than six months old, against a white or light-coloured background
  • Accommodation evidence: a colour copy of a hotel reservation or rental agreement for the entire duration of your trip, proof that you own property in the Netherlands, or — if you are staying with a host who is sponsoring your costs — a completed proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form (IND form 1310) signed by your host and legalised by their Dutch municipality
  • Travel medical insurance valid in all Schengen countries for the whole stay, covering at least EUR 30,000 in medical expenses, plus a travel reservation — a flight booking, tour reservation, or car rental reservation with your driving licence (the checklist states you do not need a paid travel ticket)
  • Proof of who pays for the trip — bank statements for the previous three months and, if employed, recent payslips — together with the original and a colour copy of proof of legal residence where you apply, and evidence of your social and economic ties to your home country (employer's letter with job title and salary, business registration if self-employed, or proof of enrolment if a student)

Frequently asked questions

Is the Netherlands visa centre always VFS Global?
No. The Netherlands uses more than one external service provider and it depends on where you live: VFS Global runs the centres in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Türkiye and Morocco, while applications in mainland China go to TLScontact. If there is no Dutch application location in your country of residence, you may instead have to apply at the embassy or consulate-general of another Schengen country that represents the Netherlands there. Always start from the Dutch government's "where to apply" page for your country of residence rather than assuming a provider. The provider only collects the file — the Dutch embassy or consulate-general makes the decision.
How far ahead do I need my hotel booking for a Dutch application?
Earlier than for most Schengen states. You may apply up to six months before the trip, but the Dutch country pages ask you to apply no later than 45 days before departure, rather than the 15-day minimum set out in the EU Visa Code. Because appointment slots at the application centres fill up in peak season, the practical planning window is longer still, and your accommodation confirmation has to match the dates on the form you complete in the online portal. Note also that the form must be filled in on a computer or tablet — the official guidance says it does not work on a smartphone.
I am staying with family in the Netherlands. Do I still need a hotel reservation?
Not for the nights you spend with them. If your host is providing accommodation and sponsoring your costs, the checklist substitutes a proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form (IND form 1310) for the hotel booking; for any nights you spend elsewhere you still need a hotel reservation or rental agreement. Your host signs the form in person in front of an official at the town hall of the Dutch municipality where they are registered; municipalities charge a legalisation fee, and several — Almere, for example — tell a married or registered-partnered host to bring their partner to sign as well. Once the form is legalised, you must apply for the visa within six months, and the sponsor's financial liability ends only when you leave the Schengen area or five years after legalisation, whichever comes first.
Does a Netherlands Schengen visa let me visit Aruba, Curaçao or Bonaire?
Not necessarily. The Caribbean parts of the Kingdom — Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St Eustatius and St Maarten — sit outside the Schengen area and have their own short-stay Caribbean visa, which is expressly not valid for the European part of the Netherlands or any other Schengen country. A multiple-entry short-stay Schengen visa, or a residence permit for the Netherlands or another Schengen country, exempts you from needing a separate Caribbean visa; a single-entry Schengen visa does not. Visa requirements also differ island by island for some nationalities, and where and how you apply depends on the country you are in, so check the Caribbean visa pages rather than assuming your Schengen visa covers the islands.
